How often does home air conditioning need servicing?
The short answer
Check and clean filters according to the manual; they need attention more often than a professional service visit. For regular cooling and heating, an annual inspection is a practical starting point. Agree the interval around the model, use, dirt exposure and any warranty conditions.
Is one service visit per year enough?
That depends on the installation. An AC used for daily heating or in a dusty room needs different attention from a bedroom unit used only in summer. At handover, agree when professional inspections and filter cleaning are needed.

What can you keep clean yourself?
Filter cleaning does not replace a complete service. Do not open electrical or refrigerant components or spray cleaning products into the unit without suitable instructions.
- Switch the AC off and follow the cleaning instructions for your model.
- Wash only filters identified as washable in the manual; let them dry fully before refitting.
- Keep air inlets and outlets clear of curtains, furniture and other obstructions.
- Record changes in noise, smell or operation for the technician.
What should you ask about professional servicing?
Provide the brand, model code, number of units and last service date when booking. Mention a fault in advance: a planned maintenance visit is not automatically a repair appointment.

- Does the visit cover condensate drainage, operation and visible pipe connections?
- Will you receive a record of findings and any necessary repairs?
- Are call-out charges, additional indoor units and repairs included or priced separately?
When should you contact an installer sooner?
Get in touch about recurring error codes, water from the indoor unit, unexpected noises or noticeably reduced cooling or heating. Send the error code and a photo, and explain when it happens. A smell or leak can have different causes; have the cause assessed first.
