Can I install my AC myself? The rules explained

5 min read

Installing an AC yourself sounds appealing — you save on installation costs. But legally you cannot. In this article we explain exactly why, which rules apply, and what the risks are if you do it anyway.

The short answer: no

In the Netherlands and across the European Union: working with refrigerant (F-gas) is only allowed by certified engineers. An AC always contains refrigerant — so its installation falls under this regulation. Set down in EU regulation 2024/573 and the Dutch Decree on fluorinated greenhouse gases.

Which certifications must the installer have?

Two certifications are relevant in the Netherlands:

  • F-gas certification (category I): mandatory for anyone working with refrigerant in cooling and climate systems.
  • BRL 100: national accreditation for heat pump installation companies (mandatory for air-to-water systems eligible for ISDE subsidy).

Both certifications require multi-day training, a practical exam and annual re-certification. A consumer cannot just obtain them.

What happens if I do it anyway?

1. Government fine

The Dutch Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) checks for violations. Fines for illegal work with refrigerant can reach up to €10,000 for consumersand higher for businesses.

2. Warranty voids immediately

No manufacturer accepts warranty claims on a unit installed by a non-certified person. On a defect you pay the full repair yourself — for example €800–€2,000 for a new compressor.

3. Insurance may not pay out

Fire, water damage or injury from an incorrectly installed AC? Many home contents and buildings policies exclude damage resulting from illegal installation. Read your policy carefully.

4. Environmental damage

Refrigerant (R32, R410A) is a powerful greenhouse gas — thousands of times stronger than CO₂. If it leaks into the atmosphere due to poor installation, it causes substantial environmental damage. That is why the regulation is so strict.

5. Safety risk

Pressurised refrigerant can cause eye injury or frostbite if handled incorrectly. Wrong electrical connection can cause fire. A leaking installation can cause CO-like suffocation symptoms in enclosed spaces.

Important: even if you're technically skilled, you simply may not. It's not a question of capability but of legal certification.

What can I do myself?

Several preparatory tasks you can do yourself — and that can lower installation costs:

  • Prepare the work area: tidy up, cover furniture.
  • Have a socket installed (by an electrician) at the desired location.
  • Apply for HOA approval through your HOA.
  • Clean filters (after installation) is routine maintenance.

What does professional installation actually cost?

Many people think installation costs are high. In reality with us you pay from €1,699 for a complete installation— including the AC unit, assembly, piping, wall passage and warranty. The "loose" installation work itself is only €400–€600 of that amount. So you don't save much by doing it yourself, and you face significant risks.

Exceptions: does "pre-charged" AC exist?

On some webshops you'll find pre-charged ACswith "quick-connect" fittings. The idea: refrigerant is already in the piping, you just plug it in. But:

  • These systems still fall under F-gas regulation.
  • The fittings often leak after 1–2 years — warranty voids.
  • Manufacturers don't supply them in the Netherlands; usually parallel import.
  • For installation certification is still required.

Our strong recommendation: have it done by a professional. That gives you warranty, peace of mind and legal certainty.

Conclusion

You may not install an AC yourself. Working with F-gas is legally reserved for certified engineers. The "saving" is small in reality, and the risks (fine, lost warranty, damage) are large. A professional installation starts at €1,699 with us — including 5-year installation warranty and certification.
