How does heating with AC work?
A modern AC has a reverse cycle: in summer it extracts heat from indoor air and dumps it outside (cooling). In winter it does the opposite — it extracts heat from outdoor air (even cold air contains energy) and pumps it indoors.
The technology is called air-to-air heat pump. Because the AC just moves heat rather than generating it from combustion, the efficiency (SCOP) is 3 to 5, compared to a gas boiler's maximum of 1.07.

Can any AC also heat?+
Almost all modern split ACs work as an air-to-air heat pump and can heat. Check the SCOP value (≥3.0 = good for heating).
Does it work in winter?+
Yes. Modern systems work down to -15°C, some models even -25°C. Capacity decreases at very low temperatures but the system keeps heating.
