Heating with air conditioning: when does it make sense?

By Updated 2 min read

The short answer

An AC with a heating function works as an air-to-air heat pump. Its indoor unit warms the room air. This can be practical for a living room, office or bedroom; whole-home heating depends on the layout and heat demand in each room.

How does an AC heat a room?

The system transfers heat from outdoor air to indoors. A fan in the indoor unit distributes it. A conventional split AC does not heat shower water or supply radiators, so those needs require another solution.

Does AC heating work below freezing?

Many models can heat below zero, but check their capacity and efficiency at low outdoor temperatures. The lowest operating temperature in a brochure does not tell you how much heat will be available.

Defrosting can briefly interrupt heat delivery. Discuss this during design, especially if the AC will be the room’s only heater.

What does AC heating feel like?

You will feel air movement and hear the fan. Choose a position that spreads heat without constantly blowing onto your sofa or workspace. Keep the outlet clear and use a suitable, gentle setting.

Want to heat only your home office while keeping the rest of the house cooler? Make that the basis of the design. One living-room unit does not automatically heat every closed room.

When might another heat pump be more suitable?

To address central heating and hot water together, compare hybrid or all-electric air-to-water systems. For direct heating in selected rooms and summer cooling, consider air conditioning.

More questions

Is AC heating always cheaper than gas?

No. It depends on electricity and gas prices, actual efficiency and the rooms you heat. Compare costs for the same delivered heat, including purchase and maintenance.

Does a conventional split AC bring in fresh air?

Usually not: it treats existing indoor air. Keep using your ventilation system or vents. Check separately whether a particular model has a ventilation function.
